Earth Hour 2009

Today is Earth Hour. This campaign was started by WWF to raise awareness about energy conservation on a global scale. Many countries around the world will be taking part in this annual event and so should you!

I didn't bother about last year's Earth Hour which is stupid because in these times of global warming we cannot afford not to change our habits and start thinking about our role in preserving this planet.

As someone who studied to become a journalist I feel like it's my responsibility to help people understand these issues. And I will start by cutting off the power supply in my apartment tonight...

No I'm joking. My whole building will skin me alive if that happened. But I will be asking them to join me in the global 'lights out' event at 8:30pm tonite.

Check out Earth Hour 2009, they're inviting people to blog and post videos about their experiences during the event.

Peace and remember to lights out tonite!

Fighting weird with weirder...

A US firm is offering $5,000 (£3,450) for clues leading to the arrest of an arsonist who has been setting portable toilets on fire across San Francisco.

The Clorox Company is also offering a year's supply of toilet cleaning products in exchange for such tips.

More than two dozen toilets on San Francisco construction sites have been set on fire in the city in recent months, the Associated Press reports.

The cost of the damage has been estimated at $50,000.

The Clorox Company is sending out a team to advertise its offer to locals.

The patrol service is "a crappy job, but somebody's got to do it", joked a company spokesman.

Read this if you don't read...

Reading this post makes me feel so embarressed to say I studied journalism. As a media student one would assume we automatically are book worms by nature. I mean it's almost a requirement given the nature of our profession.

But aside from books for assignments and select magazines I hardly do any leisure reading nowadays. What they say is true, in today's multi-media, multi-complex, multi-screwed-up world there are far too many things to occupy our time.

When I was young I was a real book worm. Mostly because there was nothing else to do. Well, there was sports but fuck that shit! Plus my mom really encouraged my pastime by bringing me to libraries and book rentals. But as I got older and videogames became a staple in my free time, reading took a backseat. It progressively deterioted from novels and Readers' Digest to newspapers and comic books.

Now reading a full fledged novel has become a chore. My attention span has deterioted thanks to technology. I sometimes miss my childhood when things had to be done the hard and slower way. Maybe because when we're young our concept of time flows slower and we have time to enjoy every single moment of it. Nowadays I turn on my computer screen and there's so much shit going on it makes me wanna scream and hide under my covers.
